This is very rustic looking, yet extremely long lasting. The bark is stripped off the tree just as the sap is beginning to rise. Then the preparer uses a drawknife to strip the rough bark off to get to the luscious cambium layer. The cambium layer is then split into two sections: the inner bark and the outer bark. The wide sections of bark are cut down into 3/4" splints, at least ten feet long. It's a lot of work, very seasonal and very difficult to obtain. It comes in a 30 to 35 yard roll which is enough for an average chair.
