Hawaiian Lauhala Bracelet
November 21, 2009
Jim Widess

You will learn how to prepare lauhala (leaves of the pandanus plant) and weave a traditional Hawaiian lauhala bracelet. We'll have leaves from Fiji, Tonga, Kauai, and Somoa to play with and discover their differences. We'll remove the spines from the outer edges and the center of the leaf, learn how to soften the leaf and how to trim it into uniform weaving elements. We'll study many different weaving patterns to decide on the correct pattern for each student. We'll measure our wrists and make the lauhala form over which we'll weave our own personal bracelet.
The pace of the class will be exciting yet relaxing. Students from age 10 to 110 are invited to join us.
